人体病理学は、教授1、講師2、助手3、技官2名から成り、大学院生は12名である（平成12年度末）。平成11年3月31日に町並陸生教授が定年退官され、平成12年7月1日に深山正久（自治医大病理学第一講座教授）が教授として着任した。

病院病理部と協力し、東大付属病院の生検診断、剖検診断業務を支えるとともに、ヒトの病気を対象に形態学を基盤にした研究を行っている。病理学は，M1での病理学総論、M2での病理学各論・実習、M4のBSTと、基礎・臨床教育をつなぐ重要な役割を担っているため、分子病理学分野、病院病理部と協力して教育にあたっている。

1.　教育

医学部医学科学生の病理総論、各論の講義に関しては、人体の病気に対する全般的理解ができるよう、多様な内容を網羅している。病理実習は、病的臓器の肉眼観察、組織病理実習から成っており、平成12年度から実習に試験を導入した。

BSTでは、セミナー中心の実習から、1?2名で剖検症例一例をまとめ、発表する実習形式にあらためた。さらに、病理診断の実際に触れるよう、病因病理部見学、手術症例を用いた演習を取り入れている。

2.　剖検・生検診断

人体病理の実践は、剖検・生検診断という医療の中の重要な業務を担うことである。当教室も病院病理部と協力し、東大付属病院の生検診断、剖検診断業務を支えている。

毎月2例の剖検症例を取り上げ、CPCを行っている他、呼吸器、上部消化管、肝臓、婦人科、リンパ腫について臨床各科と定期的にカンファランスを実施している。

3.　研究

人体病理の研究形式は、工場型というより牧場型である。多様な解析手段を用いて、病気・病態の本質を探るとともに、その知見を病理診断にfeed backする努力を常に行っている。現在は、Epstein-Barrウイルス関連腫瘍の病理学、胃癌、肺癌、リンパ腫の病理学を中心的なテーマとして研究を展開している。
